If this is your first car, you might not know about proper maintenance procedures. Unfortunately, without proper maintenance, your car can break down. It's a good idea to make a list of the items that need to be maintained on a regular basis, as well as a schedule when they should be taken care of. This will help ensure that you keep track of the service appointments you'll need to make. Here are three important service items you should never neglect.

Oil Changes

When it comes to the care of your car, oil changes are among the most important services you can perform. Depending on the make and model of your car, you should have the oil changed about once every 3000 miles. There are several reasons why you should never put off having your oil changed. First, clean oil helps all the inner components of your motor move smoothly. Second, clean oil helps pull engine heat away from the combustion chambers, which helps prevent engine overheating and scorching. Finally, clean oil helps keep carbon deposits from building up inside your engine.

Brake Inspections

Each time you apply the brakes, your brake pads are pressed up against the brake drums or rotors. When that happens, the surface of the pad is rubbed off. Eventually, the brake pad will rub through to the brackets that hold the pad in place. As the pads wear out, it takes more distance for your car to come to a complete stop. If you do a lot of stop and go driving, you should have your brakes inspected at least once a year. You should have your brake pads replaced at least once every 30,000 - 70,000 miles, depending on the type of driving you do. Here are some warning signs you should be aware of. If you experience any of these signs, you should have your brakes inspected as soon as possible.

  • Squealing or grinding from the brakes when you try to stop
  • Pulling to one side when you apply the brakes
  • Spongy brake pedal

Windshield Wipers

You might not realize this but you should have your windshield wipers inspected each time you have your oil changed. Windshield wipers can wear out from excessive use. However, they can also wear out from being exposed to the high temperatures of summer. You should replace your wiper blades as soon as they no longer clean your windshield thoroughly.

Proper maintenance is essential to the life of your car. Use the information provided above to keep track of the maintenance your car will need throughout the year.
